The right medium for the meeting

I quite often get the comment from a person, that they find that virtual meetings in not right for them, because they need to meet in person.

But this is often based on a misunderstanding.

Virtual meetings does not mean that you should not meet your customers, colleagues or partners in person. It is just an additional way of communicating. Just like when you got a phone it did not mean that you did not meet with your friends and family - you properly just keept in contact with more peoplen and then in turn then also meet with more.

The same is true with virtual meetings. You will just keep in closer contact with more people - business or private.

The right communication method depends on the task at hand. A way of illustrating this to compare the complexity of the task with the right communications method, as shown the diagram below.

The optimal communication method is illustrated with the green area. E.g. for many types of problem solving and collaboration, a web meeting is optimal, where as for simple facts exchange e-mail and instant messaging is often optimal.
